Meet the Rose Fisheries Family
Sherry
Tuttle, Owner and Vessel Skipper
Sherry's Alaska fishing adventures began in 1965 during summer
break from college in California. Her first job with a fish
buyer introduced her to commercial salmon trolling, and she
was hooked. She returned to Alaska for summers of fishing throughout
her college years. In 1973, Sherry graduated from Sonoma State
University in Rohnert Park, California, with a Masters Degree
in Exercise Physiology, and embarked on a teaching career at
Sonoma State, and then at Mendocino College in Ukiah, California.
Sherry continued to spend her summers in southeast Alaska pursuing
her fishing interests. She started out fishing from an open
skiff and camping on the beach, then, as the years passed, she
purchased successively larger vessels. Finally in 1988 she left
her teaching career and moved to Alaska to pursue commercial
fishing full-time.
Sherry's personal philosophy has always included a commitment to producing high quality seafood. That
commitment culminated in the purchase of Rose in 1993, and the investment in on-board freezing equipment.
Salmon trolling is a hook-and-line fishery that allows for individual handling of the fish. By flash-freezing
these fish within minutes of being caught, the intrinsic superior quality of the fish is preserved.
In addition to being committed to producing the highest quality wild seafood possible, Sherry is committed to
the health and vitality of the Alaska fisheries and to the small communities they support. She served on the
Board of Directors of the Alaska Trollers Association for twelve years and on the Alaska Seafood Marketing
Institute board for seven years.
Lori
Whitmill, Owner
Lori grew up in the San Juan Islands of Washington State and
developed an early interest in marine life and boating. Lori
first came to Alaska in the summer of 1982 and worked at a fish
processing plant in Petersburg to earn money for studies at
the University of California at Davis. She joined Sherry for
summers of commercial salmon trolling while she completed her
Bachelor's degree in Biology and then a teaching certificate.
Lori taught briefly after graduation, then in 1988 decided with Sherry to move to Alaska and pursue her commercial
fishing interests full-time.
 These
days, Lori is a full-time Mom and Rose Fisheries office manager,
and part-time fisher. Her talents in writing, art and design
are on display in Rose Fisheries' high-quality brochures and
promotion materials. In her free time, look for her in yoga
class or on long hikes around beautiful Sitka
Kaysia Whitmill
 At
five years old Kaysia is already a seasoned fisher. She went
on her first salmon trolling trip at the age of five months.
She has nimble sea legs and is a top-notch deckhand, always
eager to grab the deck hose and wash down the deck and anyone
standing nearby.
 Fishing
Vessel Rose
Fishing
vessel Rose was built by Skookum Marine of Port Townsend, Washington,
for the South Pacific tuna fishery. She is a motor sailor whose
heavy build has served her well in her numerous ocean crossings.
We purchased her in 1993 and converted her for the Southeast
Alaska troll and longline fisheries. With an eye toward producing
the best seafood products possible, we installed a state-of-the-art
blast freeze system. Our fish hold temperature is a piercing
minus 40 degrees F.
“In our restaurant one of the guiding
principles is 'Quality is not negotiable'.
The superior quality and handling
of the King Salmon that we receive from the F/V Rose allow us
to serve our customers the best available product 100% of the
time.”
